Eng/Span/Nat In El Salvador, US style street gangs have become a major problem for the authorities in the capital. The violent tactics, rackets and rituals that are the hallmark of these gangs have been imported with Salvadorans returning from the U.S. This isn't a gangland scene from a gangster movie or a street scene from one of the tough, urban jungles of the U.S. It's an initiation rite to a street gang in San Salvador: an example of a an increasingly common form of violence among young unemployed men in the poor neighborhoods of the Salvadoran capital. The children of El Salvador's lost decade - the sons and daughters of rebels, soldiers and immigrants - have found solace in violent Los Angeles-style street gangs that have taken root here. In exclusive footage shot by Associated Press Television in San Salvador last week, gang members tell their story and graphically show how violent the family of gangs can be. There are two main gangs in El Salvador. The Mara Salvatrucha - local slang for Salvadoran gang - and Mara 18. Both gangs originated in Los Angeles. APTV obtained a unique window into their life. SOUNDBITE: "I believe that we were born to be in the gang. We are a family and we take care of ourselves." SUPER CAPTION "El Mexicano" Member of Mara Salvatrucha El Salvador endured more than 12 years of bloody civil war. It pitted the Farabundo Marti Liberation Army (FMLN) against the U-S-financed Armed Forces. The war ravaged the countryside and forced thousands of Salvadorans to flee to the United States. Peace brought with it the return of many exiles that had lived and had children who were brought up in the unforgiving streets of Los Angeles. SOUNDBITE: I was 12 years old when I started in the Mara Salvatrucha. For me my "barrio" is like my family now. They help us when we need something. When you feel alone, they explain. That is why we are here, we are together. SUPER CAPTION: El Cachis Leader of the Mar a Salvatrucha There are more than 200 small gangs in El Salvador that revolve around La Mara Salvatrucha, and Mara 18. The government has yet to set up any programs to help these young Salvadorans. Spanish/Nat A rehabilitation programme in El Salvador that offers a fresh start in life to drug addicts and gang members is expanding to cope with the soaring crime rate. The institution known as "Poligono Industrial Don Bosco" was set up nine years ago by a group of priests and a Spanish non-government organisation in response to the country's growing juvenile delinquency. The teenagers on the programme belong to the most feared street gangs - known as maras - in El Salvador. The nine-year old programme to rehabilitate gang members is helping to reform the rising number of young criminals in El Salvador. Bettering yourself is the philosophy of the "Poligono of Don Bosco". More than just a school, the institution is a way of life, and for the pupils here, the chance of a better life. Since the end of the civil war here more than a decade ago, crime and killings have risen dramatically. This project attempts to isolate and reform the criminal element, by offering training in professional skills. It also removes these youngsters from prison surroundings where they would often learn more about crime. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We're in the country with the highest incidence of violence in Latin America, second in the world after South Africa. The 'maras' are still growing due to the amount of deportees from the United States and Canada." SUPER CAPTION: Father Pepe Morayaya, Director 'Poligono Don Bosco' There are two main gangs in El Salvador: the Mara Salvatrucha - local slang for Salvadorean gang - and Mara 18. For many former gang members, the legacy of "Poligono Don Bosco" offers hope for a better future. It is just one of several such projects. Similar reform schools have been set up around the country, funded both locally and from abroad. And they are proving to be a success with the young people they target. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I feel good because they're giving us a chance to rehabilitate here at the 'Poligono' because as you can see, we don't have to go out into the streets anymore to hang out and make noise." SUPER CAPTION: Former gang member SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "It's good because I'm not in the streets hanging out anymore, or stealing." SUPER CAPTION: Former gang member This initiation rite into a street gang in San Salvador is one example of the increasingly common form of violence among young unemployed men from poor backgrounds. The violent tactics, crime rackets and rituals, often imported by Salvadoreans returning from the U-S, have become the hallmark of El Salvador's gangs Once you are in a gang it is very difficult to break free. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "It's difficult in many cases because the gangs don't let members go easily. The main problem we face is that one, that gangs respect them and let them go. For that we have to do street work with an educator so that gangs let them go." SUPER CAPTION: Alfonzo Guerrero, volunteer For this former gang member "Poligono Don Bosco" has been a turn away from a life of crime. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I was offered this option and it was the opportunity of my life. I'm here and I think I've done a lot." SUPER CAPTION: Samuel Delgado, former gang member now university student It remains to be seen whether the new approach to delinquency will make any inroads on El Salvador's soaring crime rate, without seeing a return of the hard-line tactics favoured by the authorities in the past.
